Tension gripped Evurore Ward after violence erupted during the ongoing electoral process, with the chief agent of DP candidate Albert Kigoro reportedly attacked by suspected goons.

Kelvin Mwenda, who is serving as Kigoro’s chief agent, claimed he was assaulted while carrying out his duties at Njarage Primary School polling station. He said he had been monitoring the election process when a group confronted and attacked him.

According to Mwenda, the incident occurred in the midst of heightened political activity in the ward, raising fears among voters and party supporters who had turned out to participate in the exercise.

“I was monitoring the election process, being the chief agent for the DP candidate Albert Kigoro. A group of goons confronted me and attacked me,” he said.

In the chaos that followed, he said a vehicle belonging to Albert Kigoro, which he was using, was vandalised. Mwenda has since reported the matter at Ishiara Police Station, terming the incident as a clear case of intimidation aimed at frustrating his oversight role in the election and to scare voters.

He maintained that his presence at the polling station was purely to monitor the process and ensure transparency, as provided for under electoral laws. Mwenda called on security agencies to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.

“I have reported the matter at Ishiara police station under OB number 11, 26/2/2026. I expect police to do investigations and arrest those who have injured me,” he said.

Low turnout

The incident comes against the backdrop of a by-election already marked by low voter turnout across several polling stations in Evurore Ward.

At Kanyuambora Primary School, the polling station with the highest number of registered voters in the constituency, only a few voters were seen showing up to cast their ballots, with long stretches of calm replacing what is usually a bustling exercise.

Despite the low turnout, election officials said the process was moving on smoothly, with materials delivered on time and security personnel deployed across the ward. Constituency Returning Officer James Mwangi noted that stations which opened 30 minutes late would be compensated, with voting scheduled to close at 5pm.

Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, who cast his vote at Kanyuambora Primary School, linked the low turnout to alleged voter bribery.
