A tense moment rocked Kisii County on Friday, September 12, 2025, as political rivalries erupted publicly during the funeral of Salome Ongwae, the stepmother of former Governor James Ongwae.

What began as whispered disagreements between Kitutu Chache North MP Japhet Nyakundi and Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi quickly escalated.

Clash started after Kibagendi made remarks criticising President William Ruto, which appeared to irritate Nyakundi. The disagreement nearly turned physical as both MPs faced off in front of mourners.

Kibagendi, representing the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), was vocal about his political stance, “We were hoodwinked as a community and as a nation to elect a President who is a liar, a President,” Kibagendi remarked before promoting Nyakundi to react.

Nyakundi, standing nearby, took offence, leading to a heated exchange of words. Security officers had to intervene quickly to prevent the situation from turning into an outright fight.

The incident unfolded amid a gathering of prominent leaders, including MPs Silvanus Osoro and Dorice Donya, and Senators Richard Onyanka and Okongo Omogeni.

Their presence, along with local officials and community members, turned what was supposed to be a solemn occasion into a display of political rivalry that drew widespread attention.

Funeral overshadowed by political rivalry

The confrontation highlighted deeper political divisions within the region, reflecting ongoing disputes over local and national leadership. While funerals are traditionally moments of unity and mourning, the Kisii ceremony instead became a platform for public airing of grievances.

MP Kibagendi’s criticism of President Ruto seemed to trigger Nyakundi, who has previously been aligned with opposing political interests.

Security personnel and aides worked to calm the situation, escorting both MPs away from the immediate area of the service.

Kibagendi’s verbal attack, though brief, remains the focal point of analysis among political circles in Kisii County. His criticism of President Ruto during a community gathering underscores the tension between national party loyalties and local political alliances.

The funeral, attended by scores of mourners and officials, ultimately proceeded with the burial of Salome Ongwae, though the earlier clash left a lasting impression on attendees. The confrontation could signal further political rivalry in Kisii as the region continues to navigate competing party interests and leadership ambitions.
