The Kalenjin Council of Elders has proposed a plan to erect a statue in Eldoret town’s central business district in honour of the late retired President Daniel arap Moi.

Moi, who was the country’s second and longest serving Head of State, was accorded a State burial on Wednesday last week at his Kabarak home in Nakuru county.

Addressing the press in Eldoret town, the elders, led by their chairman Alex Mursi, asked the Uasin Gishu county Executive and County Assembly to actualise the project.

“It is appropriate to have the statue of the late retired President in our town in his honour for keeping the country stable and his immense contribution to the education sector during his reign in power for 24 years,” said Mursi.

Mursi was accompanied by the council’s former chairman Major (rtd) John Seii and Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, among others.

Seii said the late President would be greatly remembered for helping neighbouring countries affected by civil strife to resolve their political problems through dialogue.

He added that Moi contributed to the construction of flagship projects in North Rift region including Moi University, Moi Girls High School, Eldoret, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Tambach Teachers Training College in Elgeyo Marakwet county.

The governor assured of his administration’s commitment to identify a site where a monument in honour of the late President Moi will be erected.
