4 suspected gangsters gunned down in Eldoret after midnight shootout with police
Four suspected gangsters were shot dead while two others escaped with gunshot wounds following a dramatic exchange of fire with police in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, in the early hours of Monday, July 6, 2026.
The shootout occurred shortly after midnight along Kaplombe Road after police intercepted six men who were robbing members of the public at Greenfield Junction while dressed in military uniforms.
According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani, officers challenged the suspects, who immediately opened fire, prompting a fierce gun battle.
The exchange left four of the suspected robbers dead at the scene, while two others managed to flee despite sustaining gunshot wounds.
The police commander appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report anyone seeking treatment for fresh gunshot injuries, saying the two fugitives are believed to be seriously wounded.
“Mkiona mtu akiwa na jeraha, huenda ni wale waliotoroka. Hao watu sita wamehangaisha mji huu wa Eldoret. Wameenda mpaka kule Nakuru, Kitale, na juzi wameenda hadi Elgeyo-Marakwet, lakini siku zao zilikuwa zimehesabika,” Sicharani said. while addressing the press on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Translated, the commander said: “If you see anyone with gunshot wounds, they could be the suspects who escaped. These six men have been terrorising Eldoret. They have also carried out criminal activities in Nakuru, Kitale and recently in Elgeyo-Marakwet, but their days were numbered.”
Police said the gang had been under surveillance following reports linking its members to a series of violent robberies across several counties in the North Rift region.
Loaded pistol recovered
During the operation, officers recovered a loaded pistol, several crude weapons, mobile phones, and ropes allegedly used by the suspects to tie up and intimidate victims during robberies.
Investigators believe the recovered items will provide crucial leads into the gang’s operations and help identify additional members or associates.
The bodies of the four deceased suspects were moved to the Eldoret Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary, where they await identification and post-mortem examinations.
Meanwhile, police have launched an intensive manhunt for the two fugitives, who are believed to be armed and nursing gunshot injuries.
Authorities have urged residents not to attempt to apprehend the suspects themselves but instead report any suspicious individuals or information to the nearest police station.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the gang’s full criminal network and determine whether the suspects were involved in other violent robberies reported in Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.
