Babu escorted out of Wang’uru police station under tight security
Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino was on Thursday, July 20, 2023, escorted out of Wang’uru police station, Kirinyaga county to an unknown destination under tight police escort.
This comes even as the MP’s family, friends and relatives pitched camp at the station demanding his release. Officers were forced to eject them as they chanted uniformly.
“Tunataka Babu. Babu apelekwe kotini hajaua mtu” they chanted.
Babu Owino was on Tuesday night arrested under unclear circumstances.
His arrest came ahead of the highly-anticipated anti-government protests staged by members of the opposition led by Raila Odinga.
So far, a section of leaders allied to the opposition have demanded his release and his wife has also appealed to Raila to help secure his release.
Babu’s lawyer files application
His lawyer, Duncan Okatch, has filed an application for the MP to be taken to Milimani High Court today.
In his application, Okatch is seeking orders to compel the Inspector of Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to present Babu before the High Court.
Okatch argued that the aforementioned authorities forcefully arrested the MP.
“An order that the 1st respondent and or his representatives appear in person or by his duly authorised agents together with the original of any warrant or order of detention to show cause why the applicant should not be released forthwith,” his lawyer stated.
