The Mombasa politician alleged to have died at the hands of police died of a heart attack, an autopsy has shown.

The family of the late Andrew Musakhale, 47, who was eyeing the Jomvu Kuu Ward’s seat on United Democratic Alliance,  said he was reported dead shortly after being picked by police from his home in Jomvu Kuu on Monday night over a Sh57,000 debt.

Andrew’s brother, Billy Musakhale, said a post-mortem conducted at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital confirmed he died of a heart attack.

“Postmortem results are out and it has been established to be a heart attack. He was in poor health when he was arrested and even denied him his medication as a result he succumbed to heart attack,” Billy said.

“We are burying him today and from there we embark on the next cause of action.”

Before the death, Billy said his brother has had been battling diabetes and hypertension

Billy further said his brother’s widow had pleaded with police not to arrest her husband due to his condition but the officers declined and locked him up.

On the fateful day, Billy said he received a call from his elder brother informing him that the deceased was being detained at Mikindani Police Station and shortly afterwards, the brother called back saying he has been taken to Coast General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“I went to enquire what transpired at the police station. I was informed he was taken out of the cell after developing complications where he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. We are, however, wondering why police did not enlist his arrest in the Occurrence Book but recorded his death,” added Billy.
