The African Union has praised Uganda for the conduct of its recent presidential elections, noting the commitment of Ugandans to democratic processes and governance.

The statement comes after official results showed President Yoweri Museveni winning a fresh term with 71.61% of the vote.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Saturday, January 17, 2026, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission highlighted the successful management of the elections and congratulated the Ugandan leader.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission commends the conduct of elections in Uganda and congratulates President Yoweri Museveni on re-election. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61% of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on 15 January 2026,” part of the AU’s message reads.

The AU also acknowledged the role of regional partners and election observers who contributed to the process, praising their leadership and oversight.

“The Chairperson expresses sincere appreciation to Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his sterling leadership of the Joint African Union/Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)/Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda,” the statement reads.

Reaffirming its support for democracy across Africa, the Commission encouraged the continuation of efforts to strengthen governance, peace, and security.

“The Chairperson further reiterates the commitment of the African Union Commission to continue to support the promotion of democracy and effective governance on the continent, while applauding the people of Uganda for their commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development,” the statement reads.

The AU’s statement comes amid criticism over the violent elections witnessed in Uganda.
