Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Reopening of schools for term two

Primary and secondary schools in the country will reopen for the second term starting this Monday, April 28, 2025.

The timing of reopening, coming before the start of the month, has elicited complaints over the financial challenges faced by parents as many look for an alternative source to raise the school fees.

Civil groups have also raised concerns about a scheme to surcharge parents through illegal levies imposed on those seeking admission to schools.

The group and other stakeholders have demanded intervention by authorities to crack down on schools and headteachers demanding payments.

IEBC selection panel retreat

The panel is set to retreat for a week starting April 28 to compile its report, after Parliament extended its mandate by 14 days, from April 28 to May 12.

Following the conclusion of interviews for the commissioner positions that began on March 27, 2025, and concluded on April 25, the panel now withdraws for the retreat exercise to deliberate on its findings from the interviews.

The selection panel is required to submit the names of two top candidates for chairperson to President William Ruto, who will nominate one for vetting and approval by Parliament.

Reactions to Gachagua’s interview

Politicians and political commentators are also expected to react to another explosive interview by the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.

In a familiar fashion, the impeached former deputy president sustained his attacks on Ruto and his administration during an interview with a local media station on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Key among his latest claims is that the president spent over 1 billion of taxpayers’ money during his recent Mt. Kenya tour.

Reactions to Xiamen and London Marathon games

Reactions from the concluded Diamond League race in Xiamen, China, are expected to dominate Kenya’s sporting scene.

This was after the nation’s top athletes cemented dominance in the long-distance races.

In England, Sebastian Sawe headlined a star-studded list of world-class athletes to finish top in a record time of 2:02:27 in the latest edition of the London Marathon.

The win marked the fourth time a Kenyan has clinched the race.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Jocyline Jepkosgei fell short to finish second behind. Ethiopia’s Tygist Assefa, who clocked 2:15:50 to set a new world record for the women’s marathon race.

The feats added to impressive performances from Faith Kipyegon, who marked a return to the track in the year by falling just seconds short of setting a new record in the 1000 m race, and Beatrice Chebet, the world 5000 m champion, who shattered the Xiamen track in Saturday’s race.
