Afande Denno: Police who participated in June protests breaks silence after being questioned

A police officer, Dennis Munyao, popularly known as Afande Denno, has broken his silence after being taken in for questioning following his participation in the Wednesday, June 25, 2025, protests in Nairobi.
Speaking to a local TV station on Saturday night, June 28, 2025, Afande Denno claimed that he was approached by a group of men who told him they needed to question him.
According to the officer, who largely shares his content on TikTok, they identified themselves as officers from Pangani Police Station.
“They took me in the car and drove towards the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters,” he told the media station.
Questioning
Afande Denno, who is based in Dagaharey in Garissa County, told the local TV station that he was questioned for 45 minutes and treated with decorum.
“During the recording of my statement, I felt at home, and they treated me well,” he stated.

“I told them that I went to the streets at around noon and I left at around 5:30 pm, and there are videos to show it,” he added.
He, however, revealed that he expected to return to the DCI Headquarters for his phone to be examined.
Nonetheless, he challenged his fellow officers to get to the ground and interact with the people to understand their issues. He further defended his style of work, insisting that it was more of a community policing approach aimed at creating cooperation between the public and security officers.
Past incident
In April 2024, Afande Denno attracted backlash after he recorded himself publicly mocking a team of people who were heard reporting a battery case to him.

While they were speaking over each other, Denno looked directly to the camera, mocking their accent and laughing intermittently, clearly amused by their plight.
That particular incident, however, was isolated since a cursory glance at his TikTok account shows Denno engaging in a myriad of other harmless activities, which include helping out civilians with street duties, greeting his fans in crowded places, patrolling the streets at night, dancing and exchanging banter with his colleagues.
The recent protest was part of the latest activities posted on his TikTok account with over 270,000 followers.
