“708 households were displaced in Merti South and North in Isiolo after the River Ewaso Nyiro broke its banks. Schools, business premises, and health and sanitation facilities were also affected. The Kenya Red Cross will be registering affected families to provide emergency shelter and other essential items,” the organization announced.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another flood disaster in Mandera County, where over 500 families were displaced in Mandera East Sub-county.

Here, the River Daua overflowed due to heavy rains experienced in the Southern Ethiopian Highlands.

President Ruto’s call

President William Ruto has weighed in on the issue, acknowledging the severity of climate change as the biggest threat to the country’s development and prosperity.

During a pass-out parade for Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, President Ruto urged the military to play a more significant role in combating climate change.
