5,000 schools to get solar power systems

Some 5,000 public primary schools have been given stand-alone solar systems in a project implemented by the national government through Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (Rerec).
The project that was started in 2013 with the aim of supporting the Government’s Digital Learning Programme, the network put in place has as well served as a backbone for connecting households in the vicinity of benefiting primary schools.
The corporation is also undertaking 62 similar projects in various public secondary schools.
Speaking at the weekend during the launch of Rerec Mweiga Stores in Nyeri county, Rirec chairperson Prof Simon Gicharu, said the organis ation hasd scaled up its efforts to incorporate installation of biogas systems and solar-powered boreholes in various parts of the country as part of the government’s 2030 vision of transforming Kenya into a newly industrialised middle-income country by providing a quality of life for its citizens.
