3 governors are in race to be the next CoG chairperson
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is seeking to be the first female chair of the Council of Governors.
Waiguru who was re-elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket will battle it out with other front runners in the contest.
They are: Governors Joseph ole Lenku of Kajiado and Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir both of the Orange Democratic Movement.
Intense lobbying has been ongoing at the governors and deputy governors induction that enters day two today, ahead of the showdown tomorrow.
Yesterday, Waiguru laid bare her intentions to succeed former Embu Governor Martin Wambora when she took the stage to lead the induction session, saying she has what it takes to be the chair of the council.
“I am seeking to be the chair and I will be asking for your vote,” she said
If she wins, Waiguru will become the first female chair to sit at the coveted helm of the CoG.
Opening remarks
But Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, who is serving his second term, said CoG elections are not about political affiliations.
“After the opening remarks today, we have already decided that the elections will be non-partisan. At CoG we normally put our politics aside and that is why our elections are normally non-partisan. It is about service delivery,” he said.
Njuki said even though he comes from Kenya Kwanza, he is open to views from all the candidates interested in the position.
“We do not have a position that we will support a certain candidate. We know each other well and we will make an informed decision,” he said.
“There are people who have made declarations from various political affiliations and we are ready to listen to them and judge them based on their ideas.”
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who graced the opening ceremony called on the governors to work together as a team and come to a consensus.
“You should know that you are here to serve the public and if you come to a consensus the better,” Gachagua said.
