In many Kenyan households, it is common for spouses to handle their finances separately. Culturally, there’s often an unspoken rule to hide income, expenses, and debts from one another.

This, as I recently learnt, is driven by fear of control, judgment, or even cultural expectations. Let’s be honest, this often leads to mistrust, conflict, and slower financial growth.

Over the years, my husband, Justin, and I have learnt that working together toward shared financial goals can significantly improve financial stability and emotional security.

When both partners are transparent about their earnings and expenditures, they can budget more effectively, invest more wisely, and plan for the future with clarity.

Joint planning ensures that both parties are aligned, whether it’s for buying property, saving for children’s education, or preparing for retirement.

Too much to take?

Secrecy in finances can also create deep misunderstandings during times of crisis.

For instance, when one spouse unexpectedly loses their job and must rely entirely on the other, a lack of prior financial disclosure often leads to resentment or confusion.

Without a clear picture of the household’s financial standing, the working spouse may feel overwhelmed, while the dependent spouse may struggle with guilt or helplessness.

Sound familiar?

Financial partnership enables couples to make informed decisions together and support each other through highs and lows.

Now, let’s be clear, this does not mean surrendering independence. Rather, it is about building unity.

It’s time we begin to challenge the cultural norms that encourage financial secrecy because open conversations about money, however uncomfortable, are crucial for building stronger, more resilient families.
