Setting the bar: How Kenyan ladies are leading the line in sporting excellence
During the concluded 2025 World Athletics Championships, Kenyan female athletes led the charge, dominating the medal haul for Team Kenya.
The women dominated the medal table, claiming six golds to the men’s one, and utterly putting the men’s perfomance in the shade.

Just like in athletics, the Harambee Starlets and Volleyball teams, Malkia Strikers, and their Junior counterparts have also set the bar in sporting excellence.
Supporting female athletes
Surprisingly, the football arena has never quite offered the same support as the men’s team does, but this has done little to derail the ladies’ team.
They have consistently, even when underfunded, the women’s team has endevoured to show their male counterparts how it’s done.
A case in point was Kenya’s 3-1 win over the Gambia in the crucial Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier clash on Friday, October 24, 2025.
The victory put Beldine Odemba’s queens a game away from qualifying for the 2026 WAFCON , after almost a decade-long absence.
The team’s last appearance in the competition was in 2016 under coach David Ouma.
Starlets’ performance came on the back of another impressive outing in the 2025 CECAFA regionals.

The team ended the tournament as runners-up to Tanzania, showcasing grit and pride in the regional games.
The ladies’ team has also been setting the pace for splendid performance at the club level. Recently, the Police side under Odemba finished third in the tournament held on home soil, losing the semifinal to JKT Queens.
The Tanzanian outfit went on to clinch the title with a win over Rayon Sports of Rwanda.
In contrast, the male Kenya Police team managed to last for the preliminary stage, also called the group stage in the equivalent competition.
The story of women’s sporting excellence has also been exemplified by Volleyball sides Malkia Strikers and the U-20 women’s national volleyball team, Junior Malkia Strikers, who clinched the Africa Volleyball Championship against Cameroon on enemy territory.
To date, Kenya’s U17 team, the Emerging Starlets are the sole football team to have qualified for the FIFA World Cup
