A dangerous trend is apparently taking shape in Kenya in which individuals perceived to be critical of the newfound bromance between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga are attacked in broad daylight yet no action being taken against the attackers.

This alarming development not only undermines the democratic principles that the country holds dear but also threatens the safety and freedom of expression of every Kenyan.

While the so-called broad-based government may hold promise for Kenya’s future, it is equally important to acknowledge that democracy thrives on a free exchange of ideas, debate and constructive criticism.

Critics of the new political arrangement between Ruto and Raila have every right to voice their concerns, question policies or challenge the direction the country is heading without fear of retribution.

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya is the most recent leader to fall victim to goons, who pounced on him at Nyayo National Stadium, where he had gone to watch the Harambee Stars-Gabon match.

As has been the norm, police watched from a distance, as the goons chanting ‘heshimu Baba’ slogans ruthlessly punched and kicked Salasya.

A few weeks earlier, similar abuse was meted out on Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on two occasions.

Politician Rigathi Gachagua has also faced the wrath of goons on several occasions while on his meet-the-people tours or attending funerals or rallies in the Mt Kenya region.

These violent acts – whether physical or psychological – create an atmosphere of fear, silencing dissent and weakening the country’s democratic fabric.

Critics are not just challenging political figures but engaging in the fundamental right of holding those in power accountable.

No one, whether in government or opposition, should be immune to such scrutiny, nor should anyone be intimidated into silence.

The role of the government and law enforcement is clear in this scenario: they must act swiftly and decisively to protect all Kenyans and ensure that the right to free speech is upheld.

The police must investigate incidents of violence against any citizen and hold those responsible to account. Political violence, particularly when it is used to muzzle dissent, has no place in any democratic society. It is essential that the authorities send a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
