It is ironic that institutions that teach management cannot govern themselves. The University of Nairobi is a lesson on how not to run an institution.

Kenya’s premier insitution of higher learning has become a citadel for corruption, mismanagement, misuse of resources, irregular staff recruitment, arbitrary transfers, and the creation of non-existent posts.

Council of the university– led by Prof Amukowa Anangwe, who was perceived as a reformist – stands accused of mismanagement, resulting in antagonism with members of the Universities Academic Staff Union.

Trouble started in the controversial reign of former vice-Chancellor Stephen Kiama, whose appointment involved a fierce court battle. Anangwe’s council has also not been without blemish. It has been criticised for conducting its affairs in secrecy, including in the appointment of key members of staff.

In an October 14, 2024 letter, Anangwe announced the termination of Kiama’s services effective September 27, following his suspension on August 3, 2024. Anangwe explained that the suspension came after investigations into Kiama’s alleged misconduct and insubordination. The vacuum created by Kiama’s exit has caused acrimony that has pushed the varsity  to its knees.

Kenya’s ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Prof Bitange Ndemo, has been picked to take over as Vice-Chancellor following interviews for the post. It is understood that Ndemo had sought time to wind up his diplomatic assignment.

We reiterate that the appointment is long overdue and align ourselves to yesterday’s call by UoN students for administrative stability. We also support the cries of the students against the appointment of senior staff in acting capacity.

“But we are also here to say this institution has faced persistent leadership problems. We are tired of acting positions. Let there be substantive appointments across all senior positions to allow proper service delivery to students,” the said.

The students explained that a litany of challenges have persisted due to the temporary leadership, citing budgetary constraints, accommodation shortages, and general administrative inefficiencies.

The appointment of Ndemo now gives the university to open a new chapter of greater stability in its administration.
