Kalonzo slams illegal passport issuance, warns of global repercussions
Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has criticised what he termed the illegal issuance of Kenyan passports, warning that the practice could damage the country’s international reputation and put ordinary citizens at risk.
Speaking on Sunday, March 29, 2026, during an interview with a local TV station, Kalonzo expressed concern over alleged preferential treatment in the processing of passports.
Kalonzo claimed that while many young Kenyans are struggling to obtain the crucial travel document, questionable individuals are being fast-tracked.

“Passports given illegally – it is terrible. What has happened is terrible; it should never have happened. Young Kenyans are struggling to get their passports; they can’t get them, but a warlord walks into the 23rd floor of Nyayo House and gets them,” Kalonzo said.
Sale of passports
Kalonzo also said that passports were basically “for sale”, saying that such behaviour hurts the value and integrity of the Kenyan passport.
“Passports are on sale, and that devalues and degrades the value of the Kenyan passport,” Kalonzo said.
The former vice president stated that the alleged wrongdoing could have serious consequences, particularly for Kenyans who travel abroad.

He warned that if passport controls are too loose, it could lead to more scrutiny of Kenyans, especially in areas where there is conflict.
“What that means is any Kenyan travelling anywhere will be seen as an accomplice of the war in Sudan. It is terrible; it is unacceptable,” Kalonzo stated.
Passport for Sudanese nationals
Kalonzo’s remarks come at a time when there are questions of how Kenyan travel documents ended up in the hands of individuals linked to atrocities in Sudan and suspected dealings in Zimbabwe.

The list of individuals who received passports primarily consists of Sudanese nationals, along with tracking numbers for Kenyan passport applications. Around the same time, the United States released a sanctions list that included a Sudanese national with ties to the RSF.
Among those reportedly benefiting from these protections is Algoney Hamdan Dagalo, a senior RSF official who the United States has sanctioned for his role in the Sudan paramilitary outfit.
