Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has sounded an alarm over plans to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement on Tuesday July 30, 2024, the vocal lawmaker indicated that the impeachment scheme is being orchestrated to shift the attention from the current issues bedevilling the country.

Without revealing the sponsors of the said DP Gachagua impeachment plot, Wamucomba argued the plan is meant to diffuse some issues including graft raised during the protests.

Further, Wamuchomba pointed out that the impeachment motion is like a form of punishment to Mt Kenya MPs who rejected the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

“Someone thinks bringing a tribal card against The DP and leaders of Mt Kenya will diffuse the rot in the Kenya Kwanza Government as highlighted by the protestors.

“Presenting an impeachment agenda against the Dp HE Rigathi Gachagwa is a decoy to shift the attention from allegations of massive corruption and open inefficiency on various issues flagged by Kenyans. Accusing some of us for rejecting finance bill and plotting to discipline us is very welcome,” Wamuchomba’s statement read in part.

Opposing tax measures

According to the legislator, the impeachment plan is also due to the rejection of some tax measures proposed by the Kenya Kwanza government which are considered punitive to the local farmers and businesspeople.

“Any sobre MP will defend voters against such punitive taxes. Even in the future such bills will face resistance. Some of us have refused to join the club of public funds looters and swindlers in the name of lawmaking,” Wamuchomba added.

Nonetheless, Wamuchomba has dared the political leaders plotting to impeach Gachagua to table the motion.

“For now those drafting the impeachment and whipping MPs alert us when you are ready for the monkey dance.”

By the time of this publication, DP Gachagua had not responded to the reports claiming he was set to be impeached. Moreover, the owners of the impeachment motion plan had not come out to explain its reason.

On Monday, July 29, 2024, political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi warned Gachagua to be weary over an impending impeachment motion.

“Dear Riggy G: Do you understand what ODM joining government means? And Uhuru-Ruto handshake, coming soon, would mean? It means impeachment. Not if, but when. If I were you, I would lie low like an envelope. But Ruto is a good man. However, do not push him. GEMA does not like you,” Mutahi wrote on X.
