Former Nyeri MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has come out to state that he is the one who resolved the suit problem that the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, was often mocked for after assuming the Deputy President position.

While speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel on Monday, January 19, 2025, the former legislator who has been critical of Gachagua in the recent past following their fallout explained how they were once bitter foes, later reconciled, and eventually fell out again.

He stated that he helped groom Gachagua to meet deputy presidential standards, departing from the mockery he frequently faced before and after assuming the second-in-command position.

Wambugu explained that after being approached by Gachagua following the heated 2022 election campaigns, during which they were on opposing sides, they held a long meeting at Gachagua’s private residence in Karen.

He said he then decided to work with him on a permanent basis at the level of Principal Secretary, receiving the same benefits he enjoyed while serving as a Member of Parliament, such as a Prado, an armed driver, and security.

“I was put on public payroll by Gachagua, at the PS level, which was the same level I was when I was a member of parliament. Same perks – he even got me a brand new Prado. He gave me an armed driver and armed security. I can’t say he gave them to me for free because I used to work very hard,” Ngunjiri stated.

Having a strong background in communications and public relations, Wambugu said his main task was to change the appearance of the former DP.

He added that it was at this point that he began working on Gachagua’s wardrobe to give him polish and help him attain the image befitting a second-in-command.

“I remember this suti kombo thing that he was being called by Mutuse; he used to dress badly, he used to talk badly, he just didn’t have polish, there is a shine he didn’t have, and part of my responsibility and the team I was working with was to make him deputy presidential,” Wambugu added.

According to Ngunjiri Wambugu, the changes did not stop at the wardrobe but also extended to his speeches.

He said he worked on how the former DP spoke and communicated and also fought hard with media stations to accord him interviews, noting that they were initially reluctant to give him sit-down interviews.

With time, after the polishing, Gachagua began being featured in media interviews.

Wambugu further stated that they worked on him for the few months he was in office before his ouster.

Fallout with gachagua

This comes days after Wambugu’s fallout with Gachagua, since when he has sustained an onslaught against his former boss, using nearly every post to attack him.

Ngunjiri Wambugu is now among many leaders who have ditched Gachagua’s camp since his ouster from office.
