Former Defence Minister Eugene Wamalwa has come out to dismiss the recent remarks made by President William Ruto, who subtly attacked him during his developmental tour in the Western region.

Ruto’s remarks during the three-day tour in the Mulembe region caught national attention and were labelled by many as one of the darkest remarks in Kenyan political history.

The president, while going heavy on the United Opposition leaders, pointed at a leader within the opposition formation from Kitale without mentioning his name, claiming that this person “does not have a home, wife, or children.”

With Eugene Wamalwa being one of the leaders within the United Opposition who hails from Kitale, he has come out to respond to the head of state, whom many have accused of stooping too low and acting in a manner that didn’t befit the Office of the President.

Wamalwa, in an interview with a local radio station on Thursday, March 26, 2026, dismissed Ruto’s claims, stating that the president has visited his home on multiple occasions.

He added that his wife, Lucy Nalonja Wamalwa, has cooked for Ruto several times and that Ruto has eaten in their home. Wamalwa also noted that the president has met his children and seen his home in Kiminini.

“William Ruto has been to my home several times. My wife has cooked for him on multiple occasions, and he has eaten in my house many times. He has even met my children and seen my home,” Wamalwa said.

Ruto-Moi correlation

Wamalwa stated that Ruto is behaving like the late President Daniel Moi, who, according to him, used to insult and undermine his late brother Kijana Wamalwa in similar ways.

Wamalwa added that the same person Moi underestimated is the one who built a campaign machinery that eventually removed Moi from power in 2022. He warned the president that the people he is underestimating and calling names are the same people who could prevent him from securing another term.

According to Wamalwa, the president has been informed by his intelligence that he risks losing by over two million votes. He has now resorted to name-calling and looking down on United Opposition leaders.

Bungoma leaders

This comes days after leaders from the region spoke out against the president for attacking Wamalwa.

Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga expressed his disappointment with the president for insulting their own son on their soil in Bungoma, noting that locals had applauded the president even as he made what Kalasinga termed “useless remarks” about their son.
