Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has announced plans by the United Opposition to hold a three-day retreat to decide on the criteria to be used in selecting their flag bearer.

While speaking during an X Space on Sunday, March 29, 2026, the former defence cabinet secretary stated that this will come after their countrywide ‘Niko Kadi’ campaign, which is beginning today in Ukambani, then moving to the Coast in the second week of April, Western in the third week, and culminating in North Eastern during the last week of April.

Wamalwa also added that they are also reaching out to other people to see if they can work together.

“We are heading into a retreat after these Niko Kadi tours, which are beginning on Monday, March 30, 2026, across eastern, western, and northern Kenya, to agree on a formula that we’ll use in coming up with a candidate, and also we want to reach out to others so that we move together.”

During the three-day retreat, which is supposed to take place at the Coast, the convener of the formation, who also doubles as the Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, announced that he will try to persuade his colleagues to join Azimio la Umoja and use it in their quest for the presidency in 2027.

He defended this move, saying there is no need to form a new coalition when there is already one in place, perhaps only changing the name to ‘Ukombozi Kenya’.

This retreat comes after a failed retreat on February 12 and 13, when, according to Eugene Wamalwa, they were also supposed to meet and deliberate on the same, along with other agendas such as coining the coalition’s name.

United Opposition flag bearer

This also comes at a time when the United Opposition, which was recently rebranded as the United Alternative Government, are at a stalemate on which metric to use in deciding their flag bearer. Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i wants them to use a scientific method, while Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka prefers boardroom negotiations.

According to Matiang’i, they should even involve the media to organise a presidential debate among the United Opposition leaders for Kenyans to see who is best suited to be the coalition’s flag bearer.

The Wiper leader’s allies and foot soldiers have, however, come out to reject Matiang’i’s call for a scientific approach, saying that he is being used by the system to derail the United Opposition.
