Democratic Action Party (DAP-Kenya) party leader Eugene Wamalwa has stated that the High Court’s decision to uphold former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment has, instead of weakening him, made him politically stronger than he was before.

The outspoken former Defence Cabinet secretary, while appearing in an interview with a local radio station on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, dismissed the notion that the ruling had sealed Gachagua’s political future or condemned him to political irrelevance.

According to Wamalwa, the judgement has instead awakened the former Deputy President and positioned him as a key player in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.

“And those saying that Gachagua has been finished, he has now become stronger politicaly”

Wamalwa, who together with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka camped at Gachagua’s Karen residence as they followed the impeachment proceedings up to the final ruling, intimated that the former deputy president feels betrayed by President William Ruto, a man he says Gachagua significantly helped ascend to power in 2022.

According to Wamalwa, Gachagua contributed more than four million votes to Ruto’s victory, arguing that the votes he delivered from the Mt Kenya region were more than those Ruto garnered from the Rift Valley.

The DAP-Kenya leader further opined that just as Gachagua was instrumental in Ruto’s rise to power, he would equally be a key figure in the formation of the next government, which Wamalwa believes will be formed by the United Opposition. He argued that whoever earns Gachagua’s backing in the 2027 General Election is likely to benefit immensely from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua’s next step

Wamalwa maintained that the former deputy president remains politically influential and that the millions of votes associated with the region could significantly shape the outcome of the next presidential election.

He further stated that Gachagua would continue pursuing justice through the Court of Appeal, noting that he is not satisfied with the decision delivered by the three-judge bench of the High Court.

“Just like Gachagua was instrumental in Ruto’s 2022 victory, the same will happen in 2027. Whoever Gachagua supports will become the president of Kenya.”

His remarks come moments after Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Charles Kanjama also argued that the High Court’s decision does not bar Gachagua from seeking elective office in the future. Kanjama cited Article 99 of the Constitution, noting that a person can only be disqualified after exhausting all available legal avenues.

According to Kanjama, Gachagua’s matter has only been determined at the High Court level, meaning the former deputy president still has an opportunity to pursue his case through the appellate courts.
