The Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah has launched a scathing attack on the government’s handling of the death of university student Albert Ojwang, calling for international sanctions against Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

Wajackoyah urged the British government, the European Union, and the United States to impose immediate travel restrictions on Lagat and his children until he is cleared of any involvement in Ojwang’s mysterious death.

Speaking in an interview on a local TV station on Monday, June 16, 2025, Wajackoyah stated that Lagat should have stepped aside immediately after allegations surfaced linking him to the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s arrest and subsequent death.

“You cannot become the judge, in which case, the Deputy Inspector General of Police should have stepped aside. And if he hasn’t stepped aside, then I would ask the international community—and I’m going to be very strenuous in what I’m going to say—to impose an embargo on his travel and his children,” he said.

He called on key foreign allies, saying, “I’m sounding this with very great enthusiasm to the British and the European Union as well as the Americans.”

Although Wajackoyah acknowledged that he had no direct evidence implicating Lagat, he insisted that the weight of circumstantial indicators warranted serious concern.

“I’m not saying he has killed—I don’t have evidence to that—but all fingers are pointing at him, and this shows the inefficiency of Ruto’s government,” he said.

“You can see his body language on that material day. He was acting as if he was the one who struggled that morning. I could read that from the spiritual perception.”

Wajackoyah also demanded the immediate release of the arrested suspects unless credible evidence exists against them.

“Those people who have been arrested should be released if they are not the actual culprits,” he said. “The Officer Commanding Station, who is believed to have been in a drinking place at that particular time—and there’s CCTV footage indicating he was not at the station—should also be investigated,” he asserted.

The due process

He pointed out the need to verify the whereabouts of officers believed to have been involved and called for eyewitnesses to step forward.

“That woman who was at that bar should write a statement to confirm where he was at that particular time,” Wajackoyah said.

“The employees of that pub at the airport should also give evidence. And once that is raised, fine. Unless he came back to the station to help erase the CCTV footage, then he should be charged as an accomplice.”

But Wajackoyah saved his harshest criticism for the DIG, accusing the administration of shielding senior figures from scrutiny.

“The person who needs to step aside is the Deputy Inspector General of Police, and he should step aside immediately. Otherwise, I am going to contact the European Union, because I practised and received education in the United States, to make sure that this man does not step out unless he steps down.”

He said the failure of the top leadership to address the matter publicly was indicative of a collapsing justice system.

“The criminal justice system in this country is below average. It doesn’t work. It will never work—unless probably somebody like myself, or any other committed person, takes over,” Wajackoyah said.

Wajackoyah took a swipe at Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen saying he is not qualified to hold the docket.

“The Minister for Internal Security, of course, was called, but he has no experience. He is the most inefficient cabinet secretary I’ve ever seen,” he said.

The Roots Party leader critiqued President Ruto’s laxity on numerous human rights violations.

“The President has not addressed the nation. Look at what the Independent Policing Oversight Authority is doing—nothing. They haven’t even asked this man to step aside. It’s just a laughing story.”
