United Opposition rebrands to United Alternative Government
Kalonzo Musyoka has urged opposition supporters to drop the label “United Opposition” and adopt a new, bolder name: the United Alternative Government.
He made the announcement on Sunday, February 1, 2026, during a church service at ACK Gitugi in Murang’a County.
The event brought together several opposition leaders, signalling a more assertive approach ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to the congregation, Kalonzo explained that the old name suggested passivity.
“You have to give Kenyans hope,” he said. “Kusema United Opposition, ni kama kukubali mnakaa tu hapo opposition. So, we are The United Alternative Government. That is who we are.”
The new name has started gaining traction swiftly. Kalonzo shifted from “United Opposition” in his earlier posts – such as those from January 31, 2026, discussing IEBC meetings and party conferences – to consistently using “United Alternative Government” throughout the day’s Murang’a events.

In updates from Gitima, Kiriaini, and Othaya, he repeated the term while pledging change and warning against threats to democracy.
Eugene Wamalwa, who attended the gathering, followed suit. In his latest post from Othaya, Nyeri County – shared later that afternoon – he explicitly adopted the branding for the first time.”
“The United Alternative Government makes this solemn vow: we will not rest, we will not waver, and we will not allow a failed regime to continue betraying the people’s trust,” Wamalwa wrote.

The move positions the coalition as ready to take power. Kalonzo, who leads the Wiper Party, is joined by Rigathi Gachagua of DCP, Martha Karua of PLP, Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-K, Fred Matiang’i of Jubilee, and others. The group aims to present a real alternative to voters frustrated with the current government.
Kalonzo also dismissed President William Ruto’s chances of re-election. He criticised Ruto for arrogance and insults towards other leaders.
“Disorder has been the order of the day. Yaani kutukana viongozi wenzako. Kuwatukana tu. Matusi. Nakujipiga kifua. Ukijipiga kifua kusema utashinda na kura millioni mbili millioni tatu,” he said.
He continued: “And you know the truth as Fred has said. The truth is, as we speak now, William Ruto has no chance of second term. That is the truth. Ukweli ndio huo.”
Kalonzo challenges Ruto’s claims
Ruto has often described the opposition as lacking clear plans, focused on propaganda, tribalism, and division. During a UDA meeting in January 2026, he claimed he would win by two to three million votes, far above his narrow 2022 margin of about 200,000. He suggested a broad coalition, possibly including ODM, as key to a landslide victory.

Kalonzo rejected these claims, questioning where Ruto would get the extra votes. He also accused extremists within the government of plotting to reject defeat.
“In fact, the way we are seated here, it’s a clear testimony kwamba if shetani ataingilia katikati yetu, there is no way William Ruto will become president next year,” Kalonzo said.
“We even know, zote ambao wale ambo wanapanga the extremists in his government, trying to advise how ata kama wakishindwa they will not accept.”
The Murang’a gathering highlighted opposition unity in Central Kenya, a key battleground.
Other speakers at the event added their criticisms. Former Attorney General Justin Muturi questioned Ruto’s links to foreign actors involved in disputed elections in Africa. Eugene Wamalwa warned against repeating the 2022 failures, citing election technology issues elsewhere and urging the IEBC to address concerns early.
By rebranding as the United Alternative Government, the group aims to change the narrative. They wants voters to see a coalition with a clear plan to govern, rather than one focused only on complaints.
