Three UK government ministers have resigned in a single day, intensifying pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer after heavy election losses and a growing revolt within Labour ranks.

Jess Phillips, Miatta Fahnbulleh and Alex Davies-Jones all stepped down on Tuesday, with each calling for Starmer to set out a timetable for his departure. Their resignations came hours after Starmer told a cabinet meeting he would not resign unless a formal leadership challenge was triggered.

Alex Davies-Jones has become the third British government minister to resign in a single day. She has directly called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to name a timetable for his exit.

The Labour MP for Pontypridd posted her resignation letter on X on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. In it, she told Starmer the party’s heavy election defeats left him no option but to go.

“The scale of the electoral defeats at the Senedd Cymru and across the United Kingdom have been catastrophic,” she wrote. “The country has spoken and we must listen.”

Davies-Jones added: “We waited fourteen years to get into power and change the lives of those we represent. The time now is for bold, radical action.”

She described Starmer as “a good and honest man” but put her constituents first. “But in my heart are my constituents, the victims I have had the honour of working with every day, including the Hillsborough victims and their families, and all those who demand better of us.

“I implore you to act in the country’s interest and set out a timetable for your departure.”She ended the letter with the Welsh word “Ymlaen” – meaning forward.

This is now the third resignation in hours. Earlier on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Miatta Fahnbulleh quit as junior minister for devolution, faith and communities and called for an orderly transition. Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips also resigned, saying Labour needed a leader with more “gusto”.

All three ministers have now told Starmer he must leave.

The pressure follows last week’s disastrous local elections and Senedd vote. Labour lost more than 1,400 council seats in England and lost power in Wales after 27 years. Reform UK and the Greens gained ground.

Cabinet crisis deepens further

Starmer held a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning. He told ministers he will not resign unless someone triggers the formal leadership challenge process. No one has done that yet. He said the country expects the government to get on with governing.

But more than 80 Labour MPs have now publicly called for him to step down. The resignations show the scale of the revolt inside the party.

Davies-Jones served as Minister for Victims and Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls. Her resignation carries extra force because of this role. She worked every day with victims of crime and families who suffered serious loss. By naming the Hillsborough victims in her letter, she sent a clear message that the government has not done enough.

The political chaos has already hit the economy. The pound dropped against the dollar and euro. UK government borrowing costs jumped to their highest levels in decades as markets reacted to the uncertainty.

Starmer insists he is staying in his post. After the cabinet meeting, several senior ministers spoke in his support. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said no one challenged the prime minister directly and there were “many messages of support”.

Yet the wave of resignations and public statements tells a different story. Potential successors already discussed in Westminster include Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and former deputy leader Angela Rayner.

Davies-Jones made her position very clear. She wrote: “It has been the honour of my life to serve his majesty’s government as the Minister for Victims and Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls.

“I have been proud to deliver some monumental changes which will help save lives and shift the dial on the conversation.“However, we have needed to do more and therefore it is with a very, heavy heart that I feel I have no choice but to resign.”

Her departure piles more pressure on Starmer. Just one day after he tried to steady the ship, three ministers have walked out and demanded change at the top.

The next few days will decide if Starmer can survive or whether Labour forces him out. For now, the message from Alex Davies-Jones is loud: the time for bold action has come, and it must start with the prime minister himself.
