Uganda has announced that President Yoweri Museveni will be sworn in for a new term on May 12, 2026, following his victory in the recent presidential election.

In a statement, the Uganda Media Centre said the ceremony will take place at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala. The event will run under the theme: “Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status”.

“Following his election victory, President Yoweri Museveni will be sworn in on 12th May 2026,” the statement read.

Officials said preparations are already underway. The national organising committee, led by Hajji Yunus, is coordinating the event, which is expected to attract dignitaries from across the world.

Museveni, 81, secured another term after winning 71.65 per cent of the vote, according to the Electoral Commission of Uganda. He defeated his main challenger, Bobi Wine, who garnered 24.72 per cent.

The election, held in January, followed a tense campaign period. Observers, including the United Nations, raised concerns about the environment in which the vote took place. They cited reports of intimidation, arrests and restrictions on opposition activities.

Opposition rejects election result

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, rejected the outcome. A spokesperson from his party described the results as “a sham”, while the candidate himself alleged irregularities, including ballot stuffing. Authorities did not confirm those claims.

Museveni has been in power since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Over the years, he has credited his leadership with restoring stability and driving economic growth after years of turmoil.

His continued rule has also drawn criticism, particularly over constitutional changes that removed presidential term and age limits, allowing him to extend his stay in office.

Beyond Uganda, Museveni recently took on a regional leadership role. In March 2026, he assumed the chairmanship of the East African Community, succeeding William Ruto. He pledged to strengthen cooperation and promote economic integration across member states.

The upcoming swearing-in ceremony will formally mark the start of his new term, extending a presidency that has now spanned four decades.
