UDM unveils 4 candidates for upcoming by-elections
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has unveiled four candidates who will contest the upcoming parliamentary and wards by-elections.
In a statement on X on Monday, September 29, 2025, Mandera Senator and party leader Abdi Roba unveiled Fredrick Odhiambo Ochiel to contest the Ugunja parliamentary seat in Siaya County and Stephen Amwayi for the Kisa East, Kakamega County.
Other candidates who will contest via the party ticket are Onchaga Rashid Mariera for the Chewani ward seat in Tana River County and John Meyan, who will fly their party’s flag in the Lake Zone in Turkana County.

“Today, we proudly issued nomination certificates to our candidates who will carry the UDM flag in the upcoming by-elections: Fredrick Odhiambo Ochiel (Ugunja, Siaya), Stephen Amwayi (Kisa East, Kakamega), Onchaga Rashid Mariera (Chewani, Tana River), and John Meyan (Lake Zone, Turkana), a statement from Roba stated.

Elsewhere, Isiolo elders blame political wrangles on bad party politics, warn UDM leaders against fueling instability.
The party leader hailed the party’s growth from humble beginnings to become what he termed the fifth-largest party in the country.
“From our humble beginnings in 1999, denied registration yet undeterred, UDM has grown into the second-oldest surviving party and the fifth-largest in Kenya, standing for justice, equity, and service to the people,” he added.
Committed to Broad-based govt
Roba further restated the party’s firm position in the broad-based government, stressing their commitment to national unity.
“As we present these candidates, we reaffirm that UDM is a proud, loyal, and vibrant member of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. A stronger UDM means a stronger coalition, deeper grassroots reach, and broader national unity. When UDM grows, the coalition grows, and when the coalition grows, Kenya wins. Together, we are not just contesting elections, we are shaping the future of our nation,” he concluded.

The UDM’s by-election lines up comes a couple of days after the ruling partyUnited Democratic Alliance(UDA) unveiled its proposed plans to collaborate with broad-based partners ODM.
In a statement on, UDA Secretary General, Hassan Omar revealed that they will not be fielding candidates in three parliamentary seats in the upcoming by-elections, instead backing Orange Democratic Movement candidates in those areas.
“We have agreed with the ODM that they will run in some elections and that we will not field candidates as UDA. For Baringo senate and Mbeere North, Malava and Banisa, UDA will field candidates without any ODM candidate being fielded,” he stated.
“For Kasipul, Ugunja and Magarini, we will allow ODM to field any candidate, but we will join the ODM and go there to support the ODM candidate as a joint candidacy,” he stated.
