KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has praised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying he would not serve as a submissive or ceremonial deputy president in any future opposition government should a coalition win power in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a televised interview on K24 TV on Monday, June 15, 2026, Gachoka argued that Sifuna represents a new generation of leadership that is assertive, independent-minded, and willing to challenge authority rather than simply follow directives.

Gachoka said Sifuna’s political style distinguishes him from traditional leaders who are often expected to conform to presidential authority without question.

Lazima huyu kijana shupavu wa Linda Mwananchi Edwin Sifuna, tumlete katikati, kwa sababu yeye anawakilisha watu wengi, na hata vijana wa Kenya. Edwin Sifuna hatakuwa wa “yes man”. He will not be a ” Yes sir” Deputy president,” Gachoka said.

He added that Sifuna’s rising influence among young people and urban voters makes him a key figure in the evolving opposition political structure.

Calls for stronger opposition structure

The KANU spokesperson argued that any future opposition administration must be built on strength, accountability, and internal checks and balances, rather than personality-driven politics.

He suggested that Sifuna’s leadership style would bring more scrutiny and debate within government, especially in matters affecting governance and public accountability.

“Edwin Sifuna ameona vile Wamunyoro alitendwa, sasa atakuwa mtu mkali, atauliza maswali makali,” Gachoka said.

Linda Mwananchi and opposition alignment

Gachoka also referenced the growing influence of the Linda Mwananchi political movement, saying it could play a significant role in shaping a broader opposition coalition ahead of 2027.

He argued that if opposition forces align effectively, they could secure enough parliamentary and gubernatorial support to sustain a strong executive team.

He further suggested that Sifuna’s role would be strengthened by a coalition structure that includes governors and Members of Parliament willing to back a reform-orientated agenda.

Rising political profile for Sifuna

Sifuna, who has increasingly featured in opposition rallies and political tours across the country, is being viewed by some political actors as a potential key player in any future coalition negotiations.

His growing visibility, particularly among youth-led political formations, has positioned him as one of the emerging figures in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket

Gachoka also said KANU’s position is that Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should lead the opposition presidential ticket, with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna serving as his running mate.

“I can officially say here at K24 TV that from KANU’s point of view, the presidential candidate in 2027 would be Kalonzo Musyoka, and his deputy would be Edwin Sifuna,” he said.

He added that the endorsement reflects what he termed as a growing consensus within sections of the opposition seeking to build a unified front.
