Tony Gachoka: KANU officially backs Kalonzo-Sifuna 2027 presidential ticket
KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has announced that the party has officially endorsed a Kalonzo Musyoka–Edwin Sifuna ticket for the 2027 General Election, signalling a major political alignment within the emerging opposition coalition.
Speaking during a televised interview on K24 TV on Monday, June 15, 2026, Gachoka said KANU is actively involved in efforts to consolidate opposition unity and is working closely with other political formations under what he described as the broader United Opposition framework.
He stated that KANU, as a founding member of Azimio la Umoja, remains committed to political cooperation aimed at uniting opposition forces ahead of the next general election.
“KANU is a founding member of Azimio la Umoja, and because of that, our party leader is Kalonzo Musyoka. The chairman of Azimio is Uhuru Kenyatta,” Gachoka said.

KANU positions itself in opposition unity talks
Gachoka emphasised that KANU is now taking what he called a “front-row seat” in efforts to bring together opposition leaders under a single political strategy aimed at challenging President William Ruto in 2027.
He said the party is actively engaging in consultations and coalition-building efforts involving various political actors and movements, including the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has recently been conducting rallies across the country.
“KANU, being a member of the United Opposition, is playing a role in trying to build and foster unity of the opposition in Kenya,” he said.
Coordinated opposition realignment
The KANU spokesperson suggested that recent political events, including joint appearances by opposition-aligned leaders, are part of a deliberate strategy to consolidate support ahead of 2027.
“It was not an accident to see the KANU spokesman in Thika joining the Linda Mwananchi on their tour of Thika. It was also not an accident to see Irungu Kang’ata there,” he said.
Gachoka argued that the growing cooperation among opposition figures reflects an intentional effort to build a strong electoral force capable of mounting a serious challenge in the next general election.
Gachoka said KANU’s position is that Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should lead the opposition presidential ticket, with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna serving as his running mate.
“I can officially say here at K24 TV that from KANU’s point of view, the presidential candidate in 2027 would be Kalonzo Musyoka, and his deputy would be Edwin Sifuna,” he said.

He added that the endorsement reflects what he termed as a growing consensus within sections of the opposition seeking to build a unified front.
Opposition realignments gather momentum
The remarks come amid intensified political activity across the opposition landscape, with various leaders holding joint rallies, consultations, and regional tours aimed at strengthening political cooperation ahead of 2027.
The Linda Mwananchi movement and allied opposition formations have in recent weeks stepped up mobilisation efforts across different parts of the country, calling for unity and a coordinated strategy.
While no formal coalition agreement has been announced, Gachoka’s statement adds to growing speculation about emerging political alignments and potential ticket negotiations.
As Kenya moves closer to the next general election cycle, political realignments are expected to intensify, with parties and coalitions positioning themselves strategically for electoral advantage.
