Tony Gachoka fronts Kalonzo-Sifuna presidential ticket

By , July 5, 2026

KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has signalled support for a Kalonzo Musyoka-Edwin Sifuna presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a post on X on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Gachoka said the party’s position had been communicated to both leaders.

“Everyone is united, and KANU’s position is made and transmitted to both Sifuna and Kalonzo. Tony Gachoka also supports Kalonzo Musyoka for president and Sifuna as his running mate. Let’s bring this ticket home,” Gachoka declared.

The statement comes as political parties continue consultations and realignments ahead of the next general election, with attention shifting to possible coalitions and running mate combinations.

Sifuna will not be a yes man DP

Gachoka also praised Sifuna’s leadership style, saying he would remain independent if elected deputy president. “Edwin Sifuna hatakuwa wa ‘yes man’. He will not be a ‘Yes sir’ Deputy president,” Gachoka declared.

He said KANU’s position fits within ongoing engagements involving parties associated with the Azimio la Umoja coalition and the United Opposition.

According to Gachoka, joint appearances by opposition leaders and consultations across the country are part of efforts to strengthen cooperation ahead of the elections.

The proposed Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket would combine Musyoka’s political experience and support in the Ukambani region with Sifuna’s appeal among urban voters and parts of Western Kenya.

Political discussions over possible alliances, regional voting blocs and running mates have continued to gather momentum as parties prepare for the 2027 race, although no formal coalition agreements have been announced.

Gachoka’s latest statement adds to the ongoing debate over the shape of the opposition ahead of the next general election.

Western Kenya vote

Gachoka’s latest remarks echo views he shared during a K24 TV interview on June 15, 2026, where he discussed the role of regional voting blocs in the next presidential election.

He said Western Kenya would remain a key battleground because of its voting strength, noting that both the ruling coalition and the opposition would need strong support from the region.

Gachoka also spoke about the possibility of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula being considered as President William Ruto’s running mate.

“The next deputy president candidate for William Ruto must be a Luhya, and it can’t just be any Luhya; it must be a Bukusu,” he said.

He identified Wetang’ula as a strong option and questioned Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s visibility in the political landscape.

On the opposition side, Gachoka said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna would be the preferred running mate. “The opposition must also have a running mate from Western to neutralise Wetang’ula, and the only person to do that is Edwin Sifuna,” he said.
