Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula on Saturday, December 28, 2024, hinted at the Western region pushing to produce the next president.

In a statement, Wetang’ula explained that the region’s possibility of ascending to the highest seat of the land lies in its numerical strength.

Despite being a vote-rich region, Wetang’ula lamented that infighting had diminished hopes by some of the leaders to ascend to power.

Wetang’ula, however, challenged the electorates from the Western region to rally behind one of their own and support them in their bid to succeed President William Ruto at the end of his tenure.

“The secret behind the Luhya community ascending to power at the end of President William Ruto’s tenure is in its numerical strength.

“I expressed concern that despite the community boasting of high numbers of eligible voters, the numbers have not counted on polling day,” Wetang’ula’s statement read in part.

“I, therefore, challenged MPs to support their seniors who are eyeing the presidency instead of politically strangling them,” he added.

Register as voters

At the same time, Wetang’ula challenged the local leaders to push for mass voter registration. The Speaker of the National Assembly insisted that most negotiations are made depending on the number of registered voters.

“I also challenged them to drive locals to register in large numbers and come out to vote for one of their own during election day,” he insisted.

At the same time, Wetang’ula blasted the Western region leaders for their ingrained tendency to unveil political strategy at funerals.
Instead, Wetang’ula asked them to plan proper meetings before announcing their plans.

“I acknowledged that while constructive criticism by leaders was crucial for posterity, the region’s political strategy should not be unveiled in funerals.”

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Roots Party leader George Wajackoya are among the leaders from the region who have unsuccessfully contested for the presidency.

In the 2022 polls, Mudavadi backed President Ruto, who floored former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Wajackoya.

So far, no leader from the Western region has openly expressed interest in vying for the top seat in the 2027 polls.
