East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member David Sankok has claimed that the biggest political threat facing the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is not the traditional opposition, but an emerging alliance of influential leaders that he described as a “lethal” combination.

Speaking in a local station on Monday, July 6,2026 Sankok said UDA leaders are more concerned about internal political calculations surrounding a possible alliance involving Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, EALA MP Winnie Odinga, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

“What I am telling you, and Kenyans know, the people we fear are not even the opposition. The people we fear are those around UDA politics. A combination of Edwin Sifuna, Winnie Odinga, Natembeya and Babu Owino is the people we fear. Their political combination is lethal,” Sankok said.

Sankok dismisses conventional opposition

Sankok argued that the four leaders possess strong grassroots appeal and political influence that could significantly reshape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His remarks come amid heightened political realignments as parties position themselves for the next electoral contest, with several opposition figures increasingly working together on governance and national issues.

Although he did not explain why he considered the alliance dangerous to UDA, Sankok maintained that such a political combination would present a greater challenge than established opposition formations.

Winnie remains key figure in ODM politics

Sankok’s remarks also come against the backdrop of Winnie Odinga’s growing political visibility within ODM despite the party’s internal divisions.

In March this year, Winnie attended the ODM National Delegates Convention at Jamhuri Stadium, where she reaffirmed her loyalty to the party, declaring, “ODM is my home, and this is where I am.”

Her attendance came as the rival Linda Mwananchi faction, led by leaders including Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, Godfrey Osotsi and Babu Owino, held a parallel meeting at Ufungamano House, highlighting deep divisions within the party.

Earlier in February, Winnie publicly backed Sifuna after his removal as ODM Secretary-General, describing the decision as unacceptable and later joining senior party leaders in rejecting what they termed an unconstitutional leadership shake-up.

Political analysts say the continued association of leaders such as Sifuna, Winnie Odinga, Natembeya and Babu Owino has fuelled speculation over possible opposition realignments, although none of the leaders has formally announced a joint political alliance ahead of the 2027 polls.
