Senator Sigei defends political democracy amid ODM factional shifts
Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei has called for the protection of democratic expression within Kenya’s political parties, claiming that the pursuit of power and changing alliances are natural components of a healthy democracy.
Speaking during an interview with a local station on Monday, March 30, 2026, Senator Sigei argued that the law provides for freedom of association, allowing members to freely choose political formations as long as they are within the confines of the political party constitution and the supreme law of the land.

“The main objective of every political party is to get into power, take over government, and lead, and therefore what will allow one political party to achieve the objective is the interest at hand,” Sigei said.
Wrangles within ODM
While addressing the current wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Sigei noted that Kenyans just need to allow people to exercise their political democracy while obeying the regulations issued by the relevant authorities.
We would say that we need to allow people to exercise their political democracy while ensuring they work within the confines of the political party constitution and the supreme law of the land. For instance, the constitution allows, under article 38, to exercise freedom of association,” Sigei said.

Senator Sigei dismissed criticisms leveled against the ODM faction led by Oburu Odinga, stating that their moves are strategic and are consistent with the fundamental goals of any political entity.
Fight for power
He argued that their decisions are part of the broader strategy to maintain political relevance in the political space where players are keen on seeking the best path to leadership.

“The ODM faction led by Oburu wants to be in power and wishes to join hands with Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi team. Raila had the spirit of reconciling Kenyans,” Sigei noted.
