Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has announced plans to personally visit Ida Odinga, the widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as a gesture of respect and tribute.

In a post on X on November 7, 2025, Salasya shared his intentions, blending cultural homage with personal faith.

“I myself after my trip in USA I will visit mama @IdaOdinga – Dr. Ida Odinga quately with Freshan cow for milking and I will not be carrying spear and shield as a tradition but Instead I will make a small prayers with a family because am also a pastor but only known to myself so God help me to fulfill this desire of my heart,” he wrote, highlighting a unique approach that merges tradition with his private pastoral identity.

Pioneering a cultural tribute

Salasya’s visit follows a broader initiative he claims to have pioneered.

“Am a proud young leader with vision today. I was the first leader to start a conversation by commanding all Luhya leaders from Governors to make sure they take bulls to home of Baba Raila in respect to everything he had done to our community and Kenya in general all did it and am happy too all tribes in Kenya are doing so,” he stated.

The movement gained momentum after Odinga’s death on October 15, 2025, with over 100 bulls presented at his burial at Opoda Farm, and recent contributions, such as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s of 100 more bulls.

Salasya also expressed gratitude for public support. “And I want to thank every person who have visited the family,” he added, acknowledging the collective mourning across Kenya.

Family succession and national unity

Meanwhile, the Odinga family’s transition continues. On November 6, 2025, Kalonzo Musyoka visited Opoda Farm and handed symbolic “instruments of power” to Raila Junior, Raila Odinga’s eldest son, to continue his father’s legacy.

Kalonzo invited Raila Junior forward, presenting a bow and arrows to guard the territory, a small stool to signify duty, a shield for protection, and a fly whisk—synonymous with Raila Odinga. “Hii utatumia kulinda jamii ya Raila, ya Jaramogi, ya Wajaluo na wa Kenya kwa ujumla,” Kalonzo declared, emphasising Junior’s role in safeguarding the community.

Kalonzo also expressed confidence in Junior’s ability to lead, while handing a walking stick to James Orengo as a symbol of further support. These gestures followed Junior’s earlier coronation as family head on the fourth day post-burial, overseen by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, marking a familial rather than political succession.

Kalonzo later announced a week-long national tribute to honour the late Raila Odinga, highlighting the enduring legacy of the former Prime Minister.
