Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pledged that the position held by Beryl Odinga at Nairobi Water will remain within her family following her death.

Speaking at her memorial service on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in Nairobi, the governor paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Beryl in an emotionally charged ceremony.

“I had committed to her that I would take care of her family. We will not leave you. I know my chairman is here for Nairobi Water. The gap left by beryl will stay in the family; we will make sure that one of you can take that,” Sakaja.

Sakaja reflected on the deep bond he shared with Beryl and how she influenced his relationship with the late Raila Odinga. He recalled instances in which she helped him see different sides of Raila, both in moments of joy and anger, and how those experiences strengthened their political and personal understanding.

The governor narrated how, after assuming office, there were conflicting positions regarding Beryl’s role at Nairobi Water. One side demanded her removal from the board, while the other insisted she remain chairperson. The situation created tension, but Sakaja maintained her position on the board.

Sakaja further noted that after settling on her as one of the board members, Raila Odinga became furious and took the next flight to Mombasa to confront her. According to him, he had never seen Raila so angry.

He stated that he managed to contain Raila, and after a detailed explanation, they solved the matter. From that moment, he said his bond with Raila Odinga and the Odinga family deepened significantly.

Role played by Beryl

Sakaja also shared that Beryl played a crucial role in helping him learn about his late mother, who passed away when he was very young. She often narrated stories about herself, offering him a connection he would otherwise never have had.

He emphasised that he had committed to supporting Beryl and her family, assuring them that they would not be abandoned. The governor reiterated that the vacancy left at Nairobi Water would remain within the family and that arrangements would be made to allow one of them to take up the position

Sakaja praised Beryl’s contribution to the Nairobi County Government, describing her service as impactful and deeply valued.

The late will be laid to rest at Kango ka Jaramogi.
