PLP unveils new Meru aspirants as Karua expands party base

The People’s Liberation Party has intensified its political mobilisation in Meru County after party leader Martha Karua received a new team of aspirants seeking various elective seats ahead of the next General Election.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the party announced that CPA Godfrey Mwika will vie for the Meru gubernatorial seat on the PLP ticket, while Alvin Murithi will contest the South Imenti parliamentary seat. Bonface Kanywithia was unveiled as the party’s candidate for the Akithi MCA position.

“Her Excellency Party Leader Martha Karua today received new PLP aspirants from Meru, CPA Godfrey Mwika for Governor, Alvin Murithi for South Imenti MP, and Bonface Kanywithia for Akithi MCA, accompanied by Women Rep aspirant Nkirote Regina,” the PLP party said in a post.

The party’s grassroots mobilisation

According to the party, the move is a bold step forward as the party seeks to expand its political influence and strengthen its grassroots presence in the Mt Kenya region.

“Another bold step forward as PLP widens its ground and gathers momentum for liberation,” the statement read.

PLP candidate for Ol Kalou by-election

Karua has also unveiled Ndirangu Martin Wambugu, popularly known as Tinga Tinga, as its candidate for the forthcoming Ol Kalou Constituency by-election.

In a statement on her X account on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Karua expressed confidence in Wambugu’s leadership and ability to represent the interests of residents.

Karua noted that Wambugu’s entry into the party strengthens PLP’s political presence in Nyandarua County.

“Party Leader Hon. Martha Karua today welcomed Ndirangu Martin Wambugu (Tinga Tinga) to PLP. He joins as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Ol Kalou Constituency by-election. Karibu PLP,” Karua wrote.

The by-election in the constituency was triggered by the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Njunguna Kiaraho, an event that has added a layer of solemnity even as political temperatures rise.
