Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has called for swift justice following the brutal killing of Susan Nabwire, a young mother from Busia whose life was cut short by her partner.

Passaris said the tragedy, which has left a one-year-old child without a mother, must not be treated as just another case in the justice system. She noted that while financial support from the government will cushion the family, nothing can replace justice for the victim.

“Yesterday in Busia, we laid to rest Susan Nabwire, a young mother whose life was brutally cut short by the very man who vowed to love her,” Passaris stated in a post on her X account on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

She confirmed that President William Ruto had stepped in to support the grieving family with Ksh1 million. The money has been set aside as an education trust for Nabwire’s one-year-old daughter.

“President William Ruto extended a helping hand with Ksh1 million, now set aside for an education trust for Susan’s 1-year-old daughter. But money cannot replace justice,” Passaris stated.

Her focus, however, was on ensuring accountability. She urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to speed up the probe into the murder, emphasising that families deserve closure and survivors of gender-based violence must be protected.

“The DCI Kenya must expedite this case. The key witness, a maid who was also violated, is living in fear. Families deserve closure, and survivors deserve protection,” she added.

Passaris’s remarks shine a spotlight on the growing concerns around gender-based violence in Kenya, where women continue to fall victim to intimate partner violence. Rights groups have repeatedly urged authorities to not only prosecute perpetrators but also safeguard witnesses and survivors, who often face intimidation and further trauma.

Her statement also comes at a time when public attention is sharply drawn to cases of femicide and domestic abuse. The Busia tragedy has triggered calls for greater accountability from law enforcement agencies and strengthened protection mechanisms for vulnerable women.

By balancing her appreciation of the President’s support with a stern reminder that justice must prevail, Passaris underscored that government action must go beyond financial aid.
