Passaris challenges Sakaja on Nairobi leadership after surviving ouster bid
Nairobi Women representative Esther Passaris has challenged Governor Johnston Sakaja to realign his leadership with the aspirations of Nairobians following the suspension of the impeachment motion against him.
In a statement on her X page on Wednesday, August 3, 2025, Passaris urged the governor to take a new lease of life and re-anchor his leadership.
“We urge the governor to seize this moment to realign his leadership with the aspirations of Nairobi residents. We remain committed to supporting efforts that promote stability, accountability, and sustainable development in our capital,” she stated.
She also affirmed support and gratitude for the broad-based partners- Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, for intervening in the matter.

Today, together with fellow Nairobi MPs, we held a press briefing to reaffirm our unwavering support for our party leader, Raila Odinga, and H.E. President William Ruto on the suspension of the impeachment motion against Governer,” she added.
His sentiments come after Senator Samson Cherargei also waded into the abortive attempts by Nairobi County Assembly Members (MCAs) to impeach the governor.
In a statement, he opined that the move was a serious fluke and political blunder.
“To Nairobi MCAs, that was a serious fluke and political blunder that shall cost the integrity of the operations of the Nairobi City County Assembly,” Senator Cherargei wrote in an X post on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
While casting doubt on the motives behind the impeachment threats, Charargei also put the MCAs on the spot.
“The MCAs’ threats to Governor Sakaja were hot & didn’t have a noble intention of accountability on the resources of Nairobi City County.
“To Nairobi City County MCAs, 60 days shall lapse; you shall do nothing about it unless you impeach the governor!” he scoffed.

Sakaja’s impeachment motion came to a sudden halt after ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto intervened.
The principal held separate meetings with MCA from the ODM and UDA factions and prevailed upon them to stop the proceedings.
Raila, who at the start of the year endorsed the governor’s leadership and his extended term in office, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, held a closed-door meeting with Sakaja and ODM-allied MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF), during which he persuaded them to suspend their push for impeachment.
The discussions were aimed at creating space for dialogue and reconciliation between the governor and the assembly.
