Over 10 MPs endorse Wetang’ula as Luhya kingpin

Some Western region MPs have endorsed National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula as the Luhya kingpin.

Led by Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, the more than 10 MPs termed the speaker as an experienced politician.

The lawmakers also said Wetang’ula should take over from President William Ruto in 2032 when his term elapses.

“Wetang’ula has a wide political experience and politicians outside Western region should only engage Luhya community through him,” Nabwera said.

Speaking in Bungoma town, the MPs said as other counties from the region were gambling in the last election, Wetang’ula single-handedly produced votes, which enabled Ruto to ascend to power.

“He enabled this county, which has been in oppositio,n to be in the Government this time round, so we shall still use him in 2032 so that we can also lead this country,” said the ODM MP.

Those who endorsed Wetang’ula, who is also the Ford Kenya party chief, included John Makali (Kanduyi), Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East), Ferdinand Wanyonyi (Kwanza), Kakai Bisau (Kiminini), Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North), John Chikati (Tongaren), Bungoma Senator David Wakoli, Dan Wanyama (Webuye West) and John Waluke (Sirisia).

Elachi asked other elected leaders from the community who have been hurling insults at Wetang’ula to stop and respect him as their leader.

“Those who have been abusing the National assembly speaker should now respect him as our community leader and our future president,” said Elachi.

Chikati said that for the Luhya community to prosper, it must have a spokesperson to show them the way.

He said since former Vice President Wamalwa Kijana died 23 years ago, the community had lacked someone to unite them, and that was the reason they were not speaking one language when it came to political matters.

“Even cows have their leader, and that’s why when you are going to graze them, there is always one that leads the way and others follow, so we can’t stay without one of us leading the way,” said Chikati.

Makali said they were already sharpening Wetang’ula to take over from Ruto after finishing his two-term tenure.

“We shall vote in President Ruto in 2027, but come 2032, our own will occupy the highest office in the country,” said Makali.

Wetang’ula, who was present, said the community had been used as a ladder for others to ascend to power for a long time and asked the community to unite and produce one of their own as the president after Ruto.

“In 2032, we want those whom we have assisted to ascend to power to reciprocate by allowing us to use them as the ladder after President Ruto finishes his term,” said Wetang’ula.
