Opposition leaders join Jamleck Kamau during his mother’s send-off in Kigumo

United opposition leaders have joined politician and businessman Jamleck Kamau during the burial of his mother in Kigumo, Murang’a County.

The principals were seen in a sombre mood on Friday, February 6, 2025, as they came in solidarity to accompany the veteran politician to lay to rest his matriarch, Mama Jane Wanjiku.

The leaders were led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, and former Attorney General and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, while Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i was also among those in attendance, alongside other politicians aligned to the above leaders, such as Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on his way to Kigumo, was blocked by a group of Murang’a residents who wanted to hear a word from the leader who has been positioning himself as the kingpin of the Mount Kenya region.

This also comes days after Jamleck Kamau, who was aspiring to run for the Murang’a gubernatorial seat on a Democracy for Citizens Party ticket, took a break from politics.

Gachagua mourns Jamleck’s mother

This comes days after Gachagua sent a message of condolence to the family immediately after the death of Wanjiku was confirmed.

Taking to his official X account on the night of Saturday, January 24, 2026, Gachagua stated that Kamau’s mother had passed away on Saturday afternoon after a long illness.

In his message, the former deputy president described mothers as the cornerstone of families, communities, and society at large, noting that their guidance, love, and stability shape the fabric of life.

“Mothers are the cornerstone upon which homes, families, communities, and societies are anchored. Their presence provides stability, love, and guidance, shaping the very fabric of our lives. The loss of a mother, therefore, is not only a profound sorrow for the family but also a source of instability for the entire society,” Gachagua stated.

“I extend my most sincere condolences to the family of Hon. Jamleck Kamau, former Cabinet Minister and my dear friend, following the passing of their matriarch this afternoon after a long illness.”

“Good morning, good people. Due to reasons beyond my control, I have, today, 22nd Jan 2026, decided to take a break from active politics. I want to specifically thank all my supporters and assure you that I will continue engaging and consulting you as we move forward.”

“The backbone of our society, the Gen Z’s, thank you so much for the support you’ve accorded me, and I will never tire of telling you to stand firm, fair and with principles. Be back soon. God bless you all, and God bless this, our country, Kenya,” said Jamleck.
