Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives Wycliffe Oparanya has eulogised the former Shinyalu Member of Parliament (MP) Daniel Khamasi ahead of his burial on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Oparanya’s message of condolence comes hours after he joined family, friends, leaders from the region and members of the community to pay tribute to the late lawmaker on Friday, January 2, 2026.

”It was a moment of deep reflection as we honoured a dedicated leader whose life was defined by service, humility, and unwavering commitment to his people. Hon. Khamasi’s passing has left a significant gap in the community, one that will be felt for years to come, even as his legacy continues to inspire,” Oparanya said.

”I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. May they find strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time, and may his soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.

Daniel Khamasi passed away at the age of 79 while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital. The news of his death was announced by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. Further details surrounding the cause of the former legislator’s demise were not disclosed.

Khamasi passes away

”I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hon. Daniel Khamasi, former MP for Shinyalu,” Barasa took to X. In his message of condolence, Governor Barasa described the late politician as a committed leader who devoted his life to public service and the advancement of Shinyalu.

The governor extended sympathies to Khamasi’s family, friends, and residents of Shinyalu, conveying the county’s collective sorrow and wishing the former MP eternal rest. ”He was a dedicated servant whose contribution to Shinyalu will be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Shinyalu,” Barasa added.

Khamasi served as Shinyalu’s Member of Parliament for a decade, beginning his parliamentary journey in 1997 after winning the seat on a FORD–Kenya ticket. He successfully defended his position in the 2002 General Election under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC).

His tenure came to an end in 2007 when he lost the seat to Charles Lugano Lilechi of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
During his time in the National Assembly, Khamasi also occasionally took on the role of deputy speaker.
