Oburu stresses ODM unity, warns against conflicting statements
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Odinga has warned against conflicting statements among party members, especially after agreeing on a specific direction.
While speaking during his condolence visit to the family of the former Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Oburu stated that once the ODM party sits down and agrees on a specific direction to take, members should move in unison and speak with one voice.
He cautioned against situations where, after reaching an agreement, party members go on to issue statements that contradict the party’s agreed position.
He went on to clarify that he is not the kind of leader whose word is final or who dictates directions unilaterally.
Oburu emphasized that he is a consultative leader who involves party members and the leadership in discussions before any agreement is reached.
However, he made it clear that once a consensus is achieved, all members should adhere to the agreed path.
“Siwezi sema najua kila kitu, ama nikisema ati left ni left, lazima tuconsult na watu wetu, lakini tukisha consult, na tumeshakubaliana, ati hii ndio policy ya chama, kila mtu aseme hio language, isiwe tukitoka hapo, huyu anasema language yake, huyu yake.” Oburu said.
This comes amid concerns raised by a section of ODM leaders led by Siaya Governor James Orengo, who recently accused some elements within the party of attempting to hand over the Orange party to the President.

Orengo claimed that he has evidence showing that some individuals are seeking to “sell” the vibrant Orange party.
ODM wrangles
Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna also raised concerns, stating that the direction the party should take in the next General Election should only be decided after the majority of members agree on who to support in 2027.

He maintained that such a decision should not be made by a small section of leaders. Sifuna added that the late former Prime Minister had stated that the party would produce a presidential candidate and never said that ODM should support a specific individual.
Elsewhere, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi told the Luo nation that no one from the community currently has the ability and capacity to marshal a campaign capable of defeating the president in 2027.
For this reason, he called on the region to support the President’s re-election, arguing that the Head of State would return the favour.
