Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Oburu Oginga has vouched for his capacity to steer the ODM party following the death of its former leader, Raila Odinga.

Speaking during the party’s outreach meeting in Mombasa County this Saturday, November 1, 2025, the senator detailed his impressive political CV as crucial in steering the party forward.

He refuted that his choice was based on his familial relationship with Raila Odinga.

“Many are saying this is a family issue. I have enough experience to lead. I have been a leader for this nation for many years. I began as a councilor in 1974 in Kisumu, as an elected one.

Oburu outlined his political longevity, tracing his rise from a mere councillor to one of the country’s longest-serving politicians.

“I have been elected in Bondo four times, nominated once, and served in the EALA. I am now serving my seventh term in the Kenyan parliament. So I believe I have the experience to lead,” he stated.

In a stirring address, Oburu emphasised maintaining unity and strength through its numbers.

He stated that the members are the lifeblood of any political outfit.

“The party is its people. If you support me, we will all be successful. I appeal that we work together; if ODM remains strong, we will earn our respect, but if we allow people to get in between us and divide us, then we will fall apart,” he stated.

I implore you to stand firm and affirm our unity, and we will be successful. I came today to ask that we continue and remain united as we work together,” he added.

Nassir vouches for Oburu

Speaking at the same function, Mombasa Governor and Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir also endorsed Oburu’s capabilities.

“Our Party Leader is wise and steady; he is well-experienced and suitable to lead the party in preparing for the coming elections. We assure him of our full and unwavering support,” he stated on his X Page.

Nassir added that the Mombasa delegates had reaffirmed their unwavering support for Oburu during a consultative meeting held at the Office of the Governor in Treasury Square.

“As a party, we remain firmly united and focused on strengthening our grassroots structures in readiness for the forthcoming elections. In Mombasa, our commitment is clear: to ensure ODM sweeps all elective seats by championing the values that define us: good governance, strong devolution, democracy, and respect for human rights,” he added.
