Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga is set to preside over the memorial ceremony of the late Raila Odinga in Homa Bay on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The party leader made his way into a packed Raila Odinga Stadium in Home Bay (ROSH) for the planned memorial, with a sea of supporters draped in party regalia following his motorcade.

According to the party, the event is planned in honour of the life and times of the departed leader and former prime minister’s commitment to democracy, social justice, and equity in the country.

Similar memorial services are set to be held in regions across the country.

Others in attendance include Gladys Wanga, the area governor; Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko; Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthew Owili; Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma; Rangwe counterpart Lilian Gogo of Kasipul Kobondo; and youthful Kasipul parliamentary aspirant Boyd Were, among other grassroots leaders.

Uganda’s memorial

The celebrations have also been held outside the country, with Kampala, Uganda, hosting a special memorial prayer service on October 28, 2025, at the All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero, Kampala.

Captain Mike Mukula, National Chairman of the Pan-African Movement Uganda chapter, and JB John Baptist Ouma, an aspiring Ugandan politician, organised the service in the neigbouring country.

The foregoing comes as Oburu declared his readiness to steer the ODM party post-Raila era.

Speaking during the party’s outreach meeting in Mombasa County this Saturday, November 1, 2025, the senator detailed his impressive political CV as crucial in steering the party forward.

Capable

“Many are saying this is a family issue. I have enough experience to lead. I have been a leader for this nation for many years. I began as a councillor in 1974 in Kisumu, as an elected one.

Oburu outlined his political longevity, tracing his rise from a mere councillor to one of the country’s longest-serving politicians.

“I have been elected in Bondo four times, nominated once, and served in the EALA. I am now serving my seventh term in the Kenyan parliament. So I believe I have the experience to lead,” he stated.
