Nyando MP Jared Okello exudes confidence in IEBC’s ability to deliver the 2027 Elections

Nyando Member of Parliament Jared Odoyo has expressed confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), saying the electoral body is well-positioned to deliver a credible and transparent General Election in 2027, as well as other polls.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the MP lauded recent efforts to reconstitute the IEBC, stating that the institution is now better prepared to handle future electoral exercises following the appointment of new commissioners.
“I have full confidence in the IEBC,” Okello said. “We believe that the IEBC, as currently constituted, can deliver free, fair, and verifiable elections in 2027 and even in any other subsequent by-elections or referenda.”
Okello, who is serving his second term in Parliament under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), said that while challenges have previously dogged the electoral body, the current reforms offer a fresh start for the institution.
He emphasised the importance of allowing the IEBC to operate independently, free from political interference, noting that this is the only way to ensure that Kenyans’ will is respected at the ballot box.
“As leaders, we must allow IEBC to carry out its mandate without intimidation or manipulation,” he stated. “Only then can we guarantee the credibility of our democracy.”
At the same time, Okello reiterated that ODM party leader Raila Odinga remains the political compass for millions of Kenyans and will provide direction on the party’s political path ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“We are waiting for Baba (Raila Odinga). He will give us direction, and we will follow,” said the legislator. “He has led this country through many political transitions, and his leadership remains critical to the democratic space.”
Okello dismissed any speculation that ODM was uncertain about its position ahead of the polls, saying the party remained united and would rally behind whatever strategy is put forward by its leader.
“Raila Odinga is not just the ODM leader; he is a national figure,” he said. “He understands the political terrain better than anyone else, and we trust that he will guide us accordingly.”
Okello’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments in anticipation of the 2027 elections, with various parties positioning themselves for coalitions and broader influence.

ODM 2027 plans?
The MP also expressed support for the idea of a broad-based government, terming it inclusive and representative of Kenya’s diverse population. He said that such a government would reduce political tension, foster national unity, and ensure equitable distribution of resources.
“A broad-based government is not about weakening the opposition,” Okello clarified.
“It is about bringing all voices to the table. It is inclusive and promotes shared governance.”
He noted that the political tensions witnessed after past elections had often been due to perceptions of exclusion and marginalisation, sentiments which could be addressed through a government of national unity.
“Kenya is made up of many communities, and no single group should feel left out,” he said. “Inclusivity is key to lasting peace and development.”
The MP further underscored the importance of national dialogue in addressing long-standing political and economic challenges. He welcomed the recent engagements between opposition and government leaders, saying dialogue is not a sign of weakness, but of mature democracy.
“Dialogue is not surrender; it is the path to progress,” Okello remarked. “We must talk to each other, not at each other, if we are to move forward as a country.”
On the question of political succession and the future of opposition politics in Kenya, Okello maintained that the ODM party is stable and would continue to champion reforms and good governance, regardless of the prevailing political winds.
“The future of ODM is secure,” he said. “We are a movement grounded in justice, equity, and democracy. We are not shaken.”
