By , February 4, 2026

Former Nyeri Town constituency Member of Parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu has trolled the Wiper Patriotic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka over his decision to accept his appointment as the party leader for the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.

Taking it to his Facebook account on the night of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Ngunjiri questioned why Kalonzo Musyoka accepted the offer, considering his earlier sentiments that the coalition had collapsed.

“Your Excellency. You once officially said Azimio was dead,” Ngunjiri posed.

Ngunjiri’s sentiments follow the decision of Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka to accept his appointment as party leader of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Principled leadership

In his acceptance, Kalonzo pledged to offer principled leadership focused on national renewal.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Kalonzo thanked the leadership of the coalition for the trust bestowed upon him, describing the appointment as a responsibility that goes beyond his personal ambition.

‎I graciously accept my appointment as Party Leader of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition. I thank our chairman, President Uhuru Kenyatta, the coalition leadership, and all constituent parties for this trust. I congratulate my colleagues entrusted with various leadership positions.

‎”Azimio continues to represent the hopes of millions who believe in justice, inclusivity and a Kenya that works for everyone. We welcome other like-minded individuals and parties to join us as the government in waiting. “Kalonzo said.

“This is bigger than any individual; it is about Kenya. I urge my fellow countrymen and women not to despair. Together, we will offer principled leadership focused on national renewal,” he added.

‎The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition held a joint meeting of the coalition’s council and national executive committee that was chaired by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, which confirmed Kalonzo as the Azimio leader.

The leadership changes were confirmed in correspondence from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), which acknowledged receipt of resolutions adopted during the joint session held on Monday, February 2, 2026.

In the new leadership structure, Suna East Member of Parliament, who is also the National Assembly Minority Leader, Junet Mohammed, was stripped of his position as Azimio Secretary General, a position that has been assumed by Suba MP Caroli Omondi, while former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia has been named Azimio’s Executive Director.

In an interview late on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna affirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was still a member of Azimio.
