Ngunjiri Wambugu questions Mukhisa Kituyi absence as opposition spokesman
By Mabonga Makhanu, April 18, 2026Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has questioned the disappearance of former UNCTAD chair Mukhisa Kituyi from the public spotlight after his appointment as the spokesman for the United Opposition.
In a statement shared on his social media handles on Saturday, April 18, 2026, the outspoken former legislator sought answers on why the former Kimilili MP has been absent, especially when he is expected to speak on behalf of the United Opposition.
“Btw, what happened to Mukhisa Kituyi? He was to be the spokesman of our united opposition?”
Mukhisa Kituyi was named as the official spokesman of the United Opposition and head of the coalition secretariat in November 2025. However, since being bestowed with these responsibilities, he has done little and has not been seen in the company of United Opposition leaders defending their cause.
“The United Opposition has appointed Hon. Dr Mukhisa Kituyi as its spokesperson and the head of the opposition secretariat,” Gachagua said
Mukhisa’s opposition spokesman appointment

His appointment to head the United Opposition secretariat was highly disputed by Democracy for Citizens (DCP) deputy party leader Cleophas Malala, who stated that such a role requires a person who is young and energetic, not an older person like Kituyi.
It took the intervention of his party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, to convince him that, while they needed the energy and vibrance of young people, they also needed the wisdom and experience of an elder like Mukhisa Kituyi.
“Pale kwa secretariat yetu, tuko na ma-Gen Z na millennials ndio wanasukuma kazi hapo kwa, na wanapanga kazi mzuri sana, na tuko na imani na vijana Gen Z na millennials; lazima kuwe na mtu mmoja ako na experience wakuwaguide na kuwa mentor.”
“Nimeongea na Cleophas nikamwambia asikuwe na wasiwasi hata kwa chama yetu ya DCP amejaza vijana wengi pale,” Gachagua said.
Mukhisa-Sifuna meeting

Mukhisa Kituyi recently made a public appearance where he held a meeting between Bukusu elders and Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, aimed at exploring how their sons’ political influence could be strengthened.
During the meeting, Kituyi identified himself as the United Opposition spokesman, stating that the United Alternative government had not had time to formally welcome Sifuna to their side as one of their Third Liberation fighters. He added that the forum was meant to seal that engagement.
“Mimi kama baadhi ya viongozi katika serikali mbadala, hatujakuwa na furasa rasmi kumlaki shujaa Edwin Sifuna kama mmoja wetu wa wanao pigania harakati za ukombozi wa tatu,” Mukhisa stated.
Kituyi recently announced his retirement from elective politics but insisted that he will serve in other capacities that are not elective and will continue fighting for the country.
