Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has laughed at the Democracy for Citizens’ Party leader Rigathi Gachagua for wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest to a Mt Kenya rally.

Taking to his official Facebook page on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Wambugu argued that Gachagua has only been wearing a helmet when going to rallies in Mt Kenya, but cannot do the same while in other regions, such as Eastern.

The former Gachagua aide-turned foe termed the former deputy president’s move as drama.

“Meanwhile, have you noted that Jofri only wears helmets in Mt Kenya. Hata Ukambani, he doesn’t. Drama analetea sisi Wakikuyu tu,” Wambugu stated.

Gachagua in Kagio

Gachagua, on Friday, January 9, 2026, addressed his supporters in Kagio, Kirinyaga County, while wearing protective gear that included a military-style helmet and a bulletproof vest.

In the image shared on his X account, Gachagua was seen standing through the sunroof of a vehicle, holding a handheld microphone as he spoke to the crowd.

He was dressed in a bright green long-sleeved shirt layered under a dark ballistic vest, with the protective gear visibly strapped around his torso. A black helmet, commonly associated with tactical or security operations, was firmly secured on his head.

Gachagua’s choice of dressing came hours after his convoy encountered teargas in Sagana as he and Nyandarua Senator John Methu travelled to Kagio for a public engagement.

Images that were circulated online showed vehicles turning back amid reduced visibility.

In a tweet hours later, Gachagua said they braved the pushback and reached their destination in one piece.

“Despite the heavy attack…, live ammunition, teargas, vandalism of our equipment…we reached the very heart of Kirinyaga County—Kagio! The people of Kirinyaga are resilient and courageous, united as one in the pursuit of change on August 10th, 2027! God bless you, and God bless Kenya!” Gachagua captioned the photos.

Gachagua wears helmet in Narok

This is, however, not the first time the DCP leader has appeared at a rally while wearing a helmet.

Gachagua made a dramatic entry into Narok town on Monday, November 24, 2025, while campaigning for DCP candidate Douglas Masikonde in Narok Ward during the November 2025 by-elections.

Gachagua claimed that government authorities had issued orders to block him and his team from accessing the town. Donning a helmet for protection, he said he navigated through village paths unknown to the police, guided by residents, and entered Narok to a warm reception from thousands of jubilant supporters.

“Clear instructions had been issued by this cowardly and brutal regime to block me and my entourage from accessing Narok Town to campaign for the DCP Democracy Candidate for Narok Ward Hon. Douglas Masikonde,” Gachagua wrote on social media.

“The people, a people united, are stronger than all roadblocks, than all bullets, than all stones, than all teargas you have in store and high seas, and than any dictator in the world!”
