Ngunjiri Wambugu explains Kalonzo’s current political woes

Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu has said that Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is the author of his own misfortunes.

Through a series of posts on Facebook on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Wambugu argued that Kalonzo’s current political troubles are largely driven by the company he has chosen to keep over the past year.

Wambugu stated that Kalonzo has historically occupied a unique space in national politics.

According to him, the Wiper leader has never generated nationwide excitement but has also rarely attracted coordinated national attacks. That, however, has now changed.

“Now he is attracting focused attacks not due to his own mistakes, but because of just one new friend he has gotten in the last year,” Wambugu wrote on Facebook.

The former legislator further reflected on Kalonzo’s political history, noting that, unlike Raila Odinga, who negotiated several major political agreements with Presidents Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta, and William Ruto, Kalonzo had only secured one significant deal in his career.

That arrangement with Kibaki earned him the vice presidency, but Wambugu questioned what long-term political dividends it yielded for his base.

“I had never realised that Kalonzo also negotiated at least one major handshake in his life,” he noted.

He added that Raila’s deals translated into tangible projects and job opportunities in Nyanza, something he argues Kalonzo cannot clearly point to.

Gachagua blamed Kalonzo’s woes

Wambugu also claimed that Kalonzo is now facing hostility from political actors in the Mount Kenya region, not because of his own actions, but due to Gachagua.

He alleged that Gachagua’s critics in the region are now determined to fight Kalonzo as part of a broader political project.

On the wider opposition narrative, Wambugu said the Wantam slogan, meaning one term is rapidly losing traction across the country.

He argued that what was once framed as a national duty to deny President William Ruto a second term is increasingly being viewed as a personal vendetta driven by one individual.

“Actually, it is now seen as more of a personal vendetta. No longer a national duty. So others are like wacha afanye. Hata ni yeye alimleta,” Wambugu stated.

His remarks add a new twist to the shifting alliances and narratives shaping the road to the 2027 General Election.
