Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has opened up about his frosty relationship with Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during a breakfast TV show on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Wambugu, who previously served as a communications expert in the office of the former Deputy President, revealed that his differences with Gachagua are ideological.

“We are not together. I don’t agree on principle; for example, on a statement that he has made several times that DCP is going to be the sole party in the Mount Kenya region,” Wambugu remarked.

Political differences

“While he may have said it to market his party, I come from the Jubilee Party, which has been around for close to 10 years now; some of our differences are political, but everyone is entitled to freedom of speech.”

The former Nyeri MP has been on a tirade on the political strategy employed by Gachagua to ring-fence the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 polls.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Wambugu observed that Gachagua spent years with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, which he abandoned, criticising leaders who opposed his joint bid with President William Ruto in 2022.

Ati no dividing the mountain? Gachagua spent 3 years insulting Uhuru (and his Mum) as he divided the mountain. He took 3.5 million votes to UDA & 1.1 million votes to Azimio,” Wambugu posted on Facebook.

“I have noticed watu wa chama haijamaliza one month believe they can advise Jubilee (which they claim is dead) on how its members should behave. This dictatorship business must be contagious.”

Still in Jubilee Party

Wambugu said that even as a staff member serving under Gachagua before his impeachment, he never abandoned the Jubilee Party for UDA.

While Jubilee party leadership has been seen traversing the country with the other opposition politicians, Wambugu still has his own reservations about the leadership of Gachagua.

The opposition leaders have vowed to put their heads together and front a single candidate to run against Ruto in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

While the Jubilee Party has settled on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate, more lobbying is expected to unite with the other politicians gunning for the presidency.

In a previous interview, Wambugu observed that Ruto could easily win a second term despite the political upheavals threatening his second stab at the presidency.
